I'm pretty sure that's the only way, although you won't be able to unlock all the characters you meet; you have to use normal attacks only against them on their own stage. Ergo, RMs whose stages haven't been made cannot be unlocked at this time. I think what you're looking for is this.

To unlock Roll, Disco, and Rhythm, you have to lose one time with Dr. Light, two times with Dr. Wily, or three times with Dr. Cossack respectively. They are the only Robot Masters currently unlockable through a method other than "Charge Shot that chump."

Thank you AMR. I tried to unlock disco and rhythm but I just died once.

Also, I noticed that when you lose these on purpose, they have to be either seperate masters, or not retries of the same fight. I tried just losing 3 times in a row to dive man by using "restart mission" but it did not work, I eventually went and beat lvl 22 bright man with my lvl 7 or 8 time man........ after that folly I lost to skull man once and then ring man..... so yea, no retry mission.

I normally don't necropost, so, forgive me, but, I figured that unlocking the 3 lady bots needed clarifying, as I just figured out why I haven't been able to unlock Rhythm until now [9/15/14].

To unlock Roll, you must lose on a ***MEGA MAN 1-originated Field*** to a ***MEGA MAN 1*** Robot Master using any team combination of Mega Man and/or ***MEGA MAN 1*** Robot Masters ONLY. The loss doesn't count if there were any non-Mega Man 1 Robot masters in the battle.

To unlock Disco, you must lose at least once on TWO different ***MEGA MAN 2-originated Fields*** using any team combination of Bass and/or ***MEGA MAN 2** Robot Masters ONLY. Each loss must be against ***MEGA MAN 2*** Robot Masters ONLY. Losses don't count if there were any non-Mega Man 2 Robot Masters in the battle.

To unlock Rhythm, you must lose at least once on THREE different ***MEGA MAN 4-originated Fields*** using any team combination of Proto Man and/or ***MEGA MAN 4** Robot Masters ONLY. Each loss must be against ***MEGA MAN 4*** Robot Masters ONLY. Losses don't count if there were any non-Mega Man 4 Robot Masters in the battle.

Forgive all the caps and asterisks, but, that's REALLY important to keep in mind if you're trying to unlock these 3 post-story, like I was with Rhythm.

@megaman x : You can only unlock RMs if you defeat them exclusively with Neutral-type abilities. Using any other element, even once, will kill your chances of unlocking it for that battle.

Also, there are some robots, like the Megaman Killers, that are boss-exclusive and can't be unlocked.

@Dr. Jekyll : I'd like to add upon that:

Even using Elemental attacks that don't do damage on first strike will keep you from unlocking the Robot Master. This means that even using a harmless attack like Leaf Shield or Skull Barrier. However, if you use Elemental Attacks while the Robot Masters is NOT active (i.e. one of his minions), then the Robot Master should still be able to be unlocked.

*Sigh* Play anx complete all the stories to get MM3 shop and beat them with normal weapons. I told you this in another thread.
