4 shards make a core automatically, for shield cores you can a) grind enker with a robot with copy soul and no held item then putting the core away to make room for another
b) take drill man with a fortune module to a field with a high shield modifier and hope his gold digger skill kicks in, which is slower
you unlock skins to buy at kalinka's shop by either using the robots or leveling up her shop by doing other stuff
