BP (a.k.a Battle Points) can determine where you are on the leaderboard. You can get Bp from playing mission, collecting items, finishing the game and more basically your progress throughout the game.
I know you can get BP by selling core but you can lose Bp because of that.
Expect from the things I named how else can you get BP?

Fighting players, though I figure that's apart of the "playing mission" part.
There's also a Veteran Bonus. I think it works by signing in every day(though I'm confused about it myself). Even then, it doesn't give much.
Honestly, completing fusion stars+collecting cores is a lengthy, yet sure-fired way to advance upwards in the leaderboards.
Nah, I think the Veteran Bonus comes from "When you created your account" vs "When you last logged in", so it gives more BP to older members of the game
Thanks, I take pride on how long I've spent in here ;)
And Fusion Stars, while they only 8000 BP each, give a pretty big stat boost, which helps a lot for grinding BP in stuff like Player Battles.
Also, I don't know where you got that idea, but selling cores does not give you BP, only hoarding them, so it also helps for BP if you have a lot of each item.
In the end, having lots of BP mostly comes down to like 20% grinding cores, and 80% player battles
